Our Frank Advice for Small Business Owners.

In case you missed it, Ashlynn and I started a company. This didn't happen suddenly or without extensive thought. I'd been freelancing for a couple of years, Ashlynn had been in agency land and, frankly, we missed working together. We also felt driven to work on projects — and with people — we cared about.

That's why a lot of people start a company: to take the knowledge they've gained and do things the way that suits them best. So here we are, working with brands who are trying to do things right and want a partner who will treat them right.

That’s our golden rule in the business world.

What Nobody Tells You About Starting a Creative Business

After spending years working for creative agencies, Ashlynn and I thought we were going in with our eyes open. But it was harder than either of us anticipated, but also more rewarding. And it’s safe to say that we’ve learned more in a few months than we did in years of working for other people.

Here's what we'd pass on to other small business owners, especially those in creative fields:

The practical stuff nobody wants to talk about: Your first hire should be a great accountant. Ours is a lifesaver and we'll share their info if you want it. Put 40% of your earnings in a separate account for taxes immediately. Yes, four-zero, forty. The IRS will come for most of it and you do not want to be caught off guard.

The people stuff that actually determines success: Do a personality assessment with your business partner or team — we recommend the Enneagram Institute. Do it with genuine openness, recognize your own issues, and help your team through theirs. Understanding how you and your collaborators are wired changes everything about how you communicate and divide work.

The emotional stuff you'll be glad someone warned you about: Jump around and act stupid at the small victories. It takes an enormous amount of work to reach them and you deserve to dance and squeal. Lean into your support network — family and friends will show up for you in ways that will genuinely blow you away. And never underestimate how much you already know. You'll constantly surprise yourself.

Our final piece of advice? You will be a better person for starting your business. Never doubt it.
